i wish you knew: personal narratives for collective change

part one: can i hold the mic

During this first session, participants will explore the importance of cultivating self-awareness as an invitation to learn about their own personal identities. Together, we will be unpacking the self: the physical self, the sexual self, the material/economic self, the spiritual self, the political self, the digital self. Participants will ask themselves: How do I understand myself? What led up to this self? How is my self shaped and influenced by culture?

part two: in solitude, sometimes i find—

This second installment will touch on the importance of honoring the seemingly trivial and the political potential of mundane self-representations. Participants will share reflections on quotidian experiences to create a personal haiku.

part three: social purposeful story-sharing

In the third installment of the series, we will be discussing the concept of personal reflections as a tool for collective change and relating that to the theory of story as light, story as glue, and story as web. The purpose of this session is to foster a sense of community and belonging through empathy and coherence that further aids participants in the process of changing personal and cultural narratives.

part four: where do we go from here

The final session for the I Wish You Knew workshop series will serve as a space for participants to voluntarily share the work created during or as a result of the previous sessions.

QTBIPOC+ Feelings Workshop Series: A four-part introspective spoken word workshop series centering QTBIPOC+ experiences

Part one: Gender Dysphoria, Euphoria, and Evolutions

This workshop is for trans and nonbinary people only. Participants will write about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences as related to gender, then share in verbal activities to build a sense of communal understanding, validation, and compassion.

Part two:  Privilege-Guilt, Marginalized Bitterness/Hurt, and Marginalized Healing/Thriving

Participants will explore + write about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences as related to feelings of guilt about privilege, and negative feelings about being marginalized, as well as healing and thriving as QTBIPOC. Participants will plan and (optionally) perform a brief spoken word piece.

Part three: Body Image Self-Talk, Race/Ethnicity, & Gender Presentation

Participants will explore + write about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences regarding body image self-talk, race/ethnicity, and gender presentation. Participants will then compose a short spoken word piece on the same topic, which they will have the option of sharing during the workshop.

Part four: De-Limiting Our Minds

Through writing, participants will explore + process some of their own limiting beliefs and work towards creating empowering, de-limiting beliefs. There will be a communal question-sharing activity, a validation circle, and an appreciation circle.
